Why Genealogy?
Each of us has forebears, ancestors who came before us and who paved the
way and contributed to who we are today. Many overcame great obstacles to
build families and even communities. Their stories and often the government
records of their very existence are buried beneath decades, and even
centuries, of census records, burial and death records, church and cemetery
records and more.
These little nuggets, gems if you will, are the clues to discovering who
you are. Have you wondered when Great-Grandpa and Great-Grandma came
over from the "old country?" Where they lived and how they made their
living? Have you wondered from whom you inherited your sense of humor,
your eye color or even that flaming red hair that no one in the family seems
to have? Have you wondered about your ancestors who were enslaved, and
wondered what became of them after emancipation? These questions and a
great deal more can be uncovered by researching your genealogy.
Ranking second only to stamp and coin collecting, genealogy is the
second largest hobby. Everyone has a family, and usually a curiosity
about those who came before them. We recommend you begin by collecting
the names, dates and places of your relatives' births, marriages, deaths and
burials, starting with the most recent generations and working your way
back, one generation at a time.
Once you have talked with all the relatives, collected the birth,
marriage and death certificates, newspaper obituaries and census records,
you may feel you need professional help in order to further your research.
You owe it to yourself, your children and those to come later to create
a record of these ancestors and the events surrounding their lives. To
discover their stories is guaranteed to be a heart-warming experience you
will treasure for years!
